Again with the Lately! But here it is!

Lately, there are more changes.

Lately, we are seeing God work.

Lately, we are excited!

Here goes...

After our fall of transitions, we have continually been in prayer for any opportunities that would use us as a family.  Amana has been a wonderful place for our family.  The school has been great for me, as a first "post SAHM" job. The farm has been good for Ben, and the kids have transitioned beautifully to the new district.

We have been greatly encouraged by our Church, and the relationships that have been built there.  We had our first Church service Easter Sunday at The Chrome Horse in Cedar Rapids.  The official count was 225 people in attendance. Some familiar faces, some not.  What an exciting time, seeing people come together!  We are truly excited to see what God is doing through Veritas Cedar Rapids!

About 2 months ago, Ben got a call from a company in Dallas Texas asking if he would consider coming down to talk about a possible job opportunity.  This is actually the company where my Brother-in-Law Steve works, and Ben and Steve have always dreamed of working together. We prayed asking God to guide us if we should even bother going.  We honestly were content in where God had us, and what we were doing, but after much consideration, we decided to go and at least hear them out, spend time with our family there, and enjoy some warmth.  We spent 4 days in Texas, Ben job shadowing, me hanging with Amanda and chasing after their 5 kids :)  Oh, I love them oodles!  We left feeling a bit confused.  What was God asking us to do?  Was there a clear answer that we were unwilling to see?  Was our pride in the way?  We gave it one more week of praying, and with confidence and peace we decided to take the position and move to Texas.  We are not sure what is in store for us, and can't explain or defend the choice or the peace we have  We have been unable to deny it.  So we are going to walk in that direction with heavy heart, in faith, believing that this is where God wants to use us.

So, here are the details...  Ben will start his job on April 15.  He is a Project Manager.  The company is called Museum Arts.  They in short, make museums. The exhibits, the technology, and the major ins and outs of of almost anything you see at a museum.  So, Ben will leave on April 13, and the kids and I will be staying here until the end of the school year.  Ben will be living with his sister and brother in law while looking for a home for us.  In the mean time, I will be tying up the loose ends here, finishing strong with the kids, and spending time with our families.  On the bright side, we have already sold our house!!  God has seen fit to take care of all of that!  That is a huge answer to prayer!  That has weighed a bit heavy on us since we only bought it 6 months ago.

While this is a bittersweet thing for us, we are excited about what is in store for us in Texas.  We have a bit of a head start there, as we have family and many friends that live in the area, plus Chase and Abby are at Ft. Hood.  (Chase is a brother from another mother.... no for real, :) he is my brother, Eddie's son!)  Which is not too far.  It's only 12 hours from Iowa.  Mom and Eddie are retiring this spring.  Ben's family can hit 2 birds with one stone with both Amanda and Ben being there.  Both families can vacation there, as there is so much to do in Dallas!  We are excited!

Thank you so much for your prayers and support of our family over these last several months.  We love you and appreciate you.  Come visit!

Lately....

Lately, there have been changes.

Lately, we are seeing God at work.

Lately, there has been excitement.

Here goes.

After a year or more of much prayer and sitting at the feet of Christ, Ben and I, under the what we feel leading/calling of Christ,  have decided with much sadness that our time here at camp is coming to a close.  God has been challenging us to take a huge leap of faith and change our lives, and therefore our kids' lives, and move on.

We absolutely cherish the time we have spent here at EIBC.  The time we have grown as a family, and Ben and I as a couple is just a treasure to us.  When we started here at camp we were coming from a time in our lives that was hard.  Ben was working treacherous hours, and I was attempting to hold everything together.  The move to camp was such a huge answer to prayer, and God was definitely in the move.  He provided in such astounding ways then and has continued to prove to us that He is able.  We know that He loves us.

In much the same way, He is proving His loving faithfulness to us now.  The things that have happened are really, humanly speaking, impossible.

Let me tell you....

In the span of one week, Ben had been approached and interviewed for a job, I had been approached about a job, and we found a house in our price range, (which was peanuts).

Ben took a job at Amana Farms, currently working on the cattle side of the business.  He will eventually transition to a position of Carpenter for the Amana Farms.  I took a postion at Amana Elementary School as an part time associate, and we have now purchased a home in Main Amana.  Ben is enjoying his job, I enjoy my job and the hours work great for our family, and the house is, well, it's amazing.  It is an Amana home, with all the character of an Amana home.  It has 4 bedrooms, is located in an area with much yard, and is close to the best fishing in Amana.  Jonah's dream come true.  There are also trees in our yard, the girls want a tree house. :) God came through with these request of the kids.  We are in the process of renovating the downstairs of the home.  The upstairs needs carpet and paint, and we will add a bathroom eventually for the kids.  The downstairs needed some attention.  We have leveled the floors, tore out the existing bathroom and kitchen, and are in the process of putting it all back together, in hopes of moving in a few weeks.

To say that God has been in all of this is an understatement to us.  We have worked at camp for 9 years.  We have no equity to roll over into another home, nor have we much savings.  For us to be able to buy a house was out of the question, we thought.  Nothing is out of the question for God.  Nothing.  I don't normally talk of money things, but let me tell you.... we bought the house for $23,000.  It appraised for more than that, which means we got instant equity.  What???? Yep!  Nothing is out of the question for God.  Nothing.

We are continually reminded of how big our God is and in fact how small we are.  We are going through a new sermon series at church.  Going through the book of Romans, yep it's great.  Check it out.  You won't be disappointed. Veritas Iowa City

Our family has been very encouraged by all that has been happening lately. Our kids are aware of what is going on, and they are excited too.  We really wanted them to understand what living in faith looks like, and we have been blown away by what God has given.  Thank you Lord for that!  That one thing alone is priceless to Ben and I.

We are excited and standing by for what God is going to do next.  I am certain He will not disappoint :)

Encouragement...

This has been an encouragement to me lately.  Not really sure of what God is trying to show me yet, but rest assured I am on a mission to figure it out!  :)  Thank you Lord for you word.

Psalm 37

Do not fret because of evildoers,
         Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the grass
         And fade like the green herb.
Trust in the LORD and do good;
         Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the LORD;
         And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the LORD,
         Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light
         And your judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him;
         Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
         Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
Cease from anger and forsake wrath;
         Do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.
For evildoers will be cut off,
         But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land.
Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more;
         And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there.
But the humble will inherit the land
         And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
The wicked plots against the righteous
         And gnashes at him with his teeth.
The Lord laughs at him,
         For He sees his day is coming.
The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow
         To cast down the afflicted and the needy,
         To slay those who are upright in conduct.
Their sword will enter their own heart,
         And their bows will be broken.
Better is the little of the righteous
         Than the abundance of many wicked.
For the arms of the wicked will be broken,
         But the LORD sustains the righteous.

The LORD knows the days of the blameless,
         And their inheritance will be forever.
They will not be ashamed in the time of evil,
         And in the days of famine they will have abundance.
But the wicked will perish;
         And the enemies of the LORD will be like the glory of the pastures,
         They vanish—like smoke they vanish away.
The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
         But the righteous is gracious and gives.
For those blessed by Him will inherit the land,
         But those cursed by Him will be cut off.
The steps of a man are established by the LORD,
         And He delights in his way.
When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong,
         Because the LORD is the One who holds his hand.
I have been young and now I am old,
         Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
         Or his descendants begging bread.
All day long he is gracious and lends,
         And his descendants are a blessing.
Depart from evil and do good,
         So you will abide forever.
For the LORD loves justice
         And does not forsake His godly ones;
         They are preserved forever,
         But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
The righteous will inherit the land
         And dwell in it forever.
The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
         And his tongue speaks justice.
The law of his God is in his heart;
         His steps do not slip.
The wicked spies upon the righteous
         And seeks to kill him.
The LORD will not leave him in his hand
         Or let him be condemned when he is judged.
Wait for the LORD and keep His way,
         And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
         When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.
I have seen a wicked, violent man
         Spreading himself like a luxuriant tree in its native soil.
Then he passed away, and lo, he was no more;
         I sought for him, but he could not be found.
Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright;
         For the man of peace will have a posterity.
But transgressors will be altogether destroyed;
         The posterity of the wicked will be cut off.
But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;
         He is their strength in time of trouble.
The LORD helps them and delivers them;
         He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
         Because they take refuge in Him.

Wisdom from Ruthie Thune and Some Spectacular Spring Salad Standby's.

I recently went to a Veritas Ladies gathering.
For those of you who don't know, we are now involved in a new church plant in Iowa City. Veritas Church.  We couldn't be more excited with what God is doing there, as well as what God is doing in our family.  Not an easy choice or transition, but God is certainly using Veritas and blessing us in our journey there.  Exciting!
Anyway....
While at this ladies mini conference I was challenged in several areas.  First, our speaker Ruthie Thune spoke on becoming a woman of influence.  What I most took away from the day, was that I need to be intentional. The idea that influence is not merely something you primarily do, it is the effect of who you are in what you do.  I need to be intentional about how I influence.  Mainly my kids, but beyond that, our staff kids, our family, our friends etc.  Ruthie gave the example of checking myself before you leave home.  We all do that, or we should :)  Colossians 3:12-17
As you examine yourself a woman of influence affirms her identity.  vs. 12 says I am chosen of God, holy, and dearly loved. A woman of influence also checks out her new wardrobe.  Vs. 12-13 explains the different garments.  Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance, and forgiveness.  These are the main areas that I need to be intentional.  A woman of influence adopts a new attitude as she looks at herself.  vs. 14-15 says that we need to put on an attitude of love, peace, and thankfulness.  A woman of influence also uses a mirror. vs. 16 our mirror is the word of Christ.  The Bible.  God's word is a cleansing agent, a light to find the sin I am hiding.  And finally a woman of influence pursues a new goal.  vs 17 I need to honor Jesus in my life, even the mundane everyday things that I don't think really benefits anyone.  God can use all things to bring glory to him.
I loved this whole day so much.  It was a great time of worship and meeting new people.
Secondly, I was also challenged to blog about some food.  I know that there are a million food blogs out there but, I don't know.... My kids eat everything I make.  That's probably good right?
Well, anyway.  Here are some seriously scrumptious salads that happen to be standard fare in this house come spring.  I wish I could take credit for them, but alas.... my Mother-in-law is the bomb.com when it comes to food.  I make some changes, but for the most part, they are standard Debbie.

Chicken Salad (feeds 7 with few leftovers)
4-5 chicken breasts, cooked and seasoned with pepper and garlic salt, and then either shredded or cut into chunks
2 bunches of grapes
4-5 stalks of celery, chopped
1/2 of an onion, chopped.
2-3 bunches of broccoli, just the florets
1 package of bacon pieces
1/2-3/4 bottle of ranch dressing, I like Hidden Valley.

Chop everything up, throw it in a bowl, and then mix in the dressing as you wish.   I like to top off the salad with cashews.  You would be surprised how much flavor this adds to the salad.  I do serve the cashews on the side, as they tend to get soggy if they are mixed in with the salad. Great on croissants, or just by itself.

Shoestring Salad (feeds 7 with few leftovers)
4 cans of tuna
4-5 stalks of celery, chopped
1/2 of an onion, chopped
2-3 bunches of broccoli, just florets
1 package of shredded carrots
1/2-3/4 bottle of ranch dressing, again, I like Hidden Valley
Shoestring Potato's

Chop everything up and mix in drained tuna, and ranch dressing to taste.  Serve with a topping of Shoestring Potato's.  Again, if you mix the shoestrings in with the salad they get soggy.  Great just as it is.

Fruit Salad (
Strawberries 1-2 packages
Grapes, 2 bunches
Apples, 2 (I like Braeburn)
3-4 stalks of celery, chopped
Chopped Pecans
Dried Cranberries or cherries

Chop fruit into bite size pieces. Add pecans, celery, and dried cranberries or cherries.  Mix all together. Coat with cream cheese dressing

Cream Cheese Dressing
1 Package cream cheese
1-2 cups powdered sugar (depending o how sweet you want it)
1-2 T Lemon juice
Half and Half
Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and lemon juice until combined, then add the half and half until it is somewhat runny.  I know... sounds gross, but you don't want the cream cheese goodness to be the star here.... the fruit is the star! Add the cream cheese dressing to the fruit salad and stir until the dressing covers all of the fruit.  You will be surprised how the celery adds to it.  Don't be frightened.

Hope you are brave enough to give these a try.  If not, call me.  I will talk you into it!

Just an update :)

Life continues to jettison past here at the Berberich abode.  We are enjoying a beautifully mild winter, the kids were outside playing the past 3 days, and I had to make them come in each evening for supper.  I love that.  What a great problem to have.... the kids want to stay outside!  They are growing and changing.
Jonah: 8th grader, pellet gun toting, tackle box sorting, anti homework, sister annoying, young man.  Desiring to serve on TAG team this summer, and hoping for Drivers Ed.

Jonah is 14.

The day has arrived again.  My son is another year older. 14 to be exact. 14. 14!  OK, now that that is out of my system, reflections on 14 years with Jonah.  1997, December 23.  I am totally and adoringly in love with a baby boy.  Sweet thing with a little crik in his nose.  Tiny boy, much potential.
1998, summertime, Jonah is now walking. I can't believe it!  at 8 months old we have a tiny toddling boy, who fits right under tables, and is quickly on his way to running.
2000, June 5. Lydia joins our family.  I had no reason to be nervous (though I was) he took her right into his heart, and lovingly adored her, got her into trouble a few times, but what are big brothers for?
2000, summer into fall into winter, Jonah is my biggest helper.  With Daddy working in Grinnell, it's just us 3 at home.  We make it work, Jonah is a great help, and is showing Lydia how to play with matchbox cars.  Sweet.
2002, again, Jonah lovingly welcomed Fiona.  He prayed for a boy oh so many times, but the look on his face when he saw her said it all.  He was head over heals over another sister. He told his Mom and Dad that she was "sure pretty" (she was)  The same response was true for the adding of Ruby and Lillian, each time praying so hard for a boy, and each time melting like butter upon meeting his sisters.
2003, July.  Jonah lost his best friend.  Grandpa Mike.  Oh the memories they had together.  He will forever remember sweet times with Grandpa Mike.
2005, January.  Our family sets out on a great adventure.  Moving to East Iowa Bible Camp.  Jonah took the transition like a champ.  The fishing hole at camp has never been the same.  :)
2007, December.  You turned 10.  I was astonished that I could possible have a 10 year old. This is how I felt then. Think back... Jonah is 10.
2011, The year has come. Jonah is turning 14. Learners permit. Growth spurts. Eating like a horse. Girls calling. Cell phone.  Reading through the bible. Spiritual growth. All these things I have prayed over him for years are here.  I can't wait to see the man that God is growing him into.  I love you Jonah Michael Berberich.
